2014 Schedule

Jan 8, 2014
Squiggle and Blob People, Laurel H.
Add people to your watercolors.  Sterling Edwards, whose CD's we have used, will demonstrate different effects you can get with your brushes, including squiggles for the suggestion of people. We will also view former NFL linebacker Chuck Mclachlan's demo on making blob people.  Come prepared to play with paints as you watch the demo's.  Do you have a picture that need "something" for balance and interest? Bring it with you and consider adding people.

"Looking at Art,  What We Like and Why" Laurel H.

What do we respond to in art?  Are there ideas we can experiment with in our own art?  Using the "Silicon Valley Open Studios Directory", we will each take a couple of pages and pick a piece of art that interests us by somebody we don't know.  Discussion will center on: What are we responding to?  Are there colors, media, subjects, arrangements, or techniques we want to try?

Bring whatever media you want to play with.  If you have an "Open Studios Directory," please bring it too.

June 25, 2014
"The Tao of Watercolor" Rita S.
HAIR DRYER (NEEDED BETWEEN STEPS)
Bring:
  • # 140 Watercolor paper.  You want to be able to move freely over the paper.  Maybe a quarter sheet or 12x16.
  • A board and tape. (optional)
  • Brushes.  Good ones that you can command into nice lines and shapes and one worn to "dab" the paint on when you want a spatter effect.
  • A brush that makes good spatters (if you decide you want them in your painting)
  • Rounds (#10, #12, A rigger, a mop, a flat wash (beveled edge works nicely to get harder lines)  Use your favorite brushes that feel like they belong in your hand.
  • Sponges (if you like to work with them)
  • Kleenex or paper towel
  • Spray bottle with water.
  • Saran Wrap (optional)
  • Pencil and gray eraser
  • 2 Water containers for rinsing brushes. (dirty water, clean water)
  • Masking fluid (optional)  (I use a chop stick to apply masking liquid)  I can run it through the pencil sharpener for a nice point.
  • Think about what colors you want to use. Primary colors that can run together and make new colors is lovely.  Use paints that are familiar to you so you know what to expect when you put them down.  Some suggestions are listed below - but use what you have.  Don't go and buy paints that you may never use again.
    • Primary colors make wonderful surprises!  Decide if your painting will be "warm or cool colors".

    • Reds:  phthalo Crimson, Quinacridone rose, scarlet lake, cad red
    • Blues: phthalo blue, turquoise, cerulean blue, cobalt blue
    • Yellow: lemon yellow. cad yellow

    • Greens: phthalo green, magnesium green, ( or mix your own)
    • Purple:  mauve, phthalo purple
    • Orange: vermilion
PS.   If I wanted to try a beautiful color that I have not used before, I would buy Magenta. I love that warm color.
